The brief

This smaller but impactful project involved the comprehensive refurbishment of a rural primary school near the Karuma hydropower project. Works included roof replacement (corrugated iron sheets over new timber trusses), re-plastering of internal and external walls, replacement of windows and doors, re-flooring with cement screed, and repainting throughout. We also constructed new pit latrines and a rainwater harvesting tank.

The school’s 250 pupils returned after the COVID-19 lockdown to a significantly improved learning environment.

The Ministry of Energy cited this project as a model for community benefit works associated with energy infrastructure development.

Our team mobilized equipment and materials to a remote location with limited road access, requiring careful logistics planning. The project was completed during the dry season to avoid weather-related delays. Since handover, the market has become a vibrant economic hub, benefiting over 300 local vendors and improving food security and income generation in the sub-county.
